With half the load capacity, it is clear to see that the reduced load capacity of the single row IMS bearing is a significant contributing factor to the increased number of failures. Logic would dictate the solution is to reduce the load or redesign using a bearing with more load capacity. Since we can’t lessen the load the bearing sees, installation of a dual row ball bearing is the logical evolution for the IMS Retrofit.

According to information published about the Eisen IMS Class Action Lawsuit, the single row IMS bearing used in 2000 through 2005 Porsche model years is reported to have an 8% failure rate, versus less than 1% with the dual row IMS bearing.

Years in the making and developed simultaneously to the IMS Solution, the second generation, patent pending, single-row Pro IMS Retrofit provides an angular contact, dual row ceramic hybrid ball-bearing with up to 90% more load capacity and like all previous IMS Retrofit kits, additional benefits include reduced wear and longer service life provided by the ceramic hybrid bearing employed by the IMS Retrofit kit.

The single row 6204 series ball bearing has a dynamic load rating of 2200-2900 lbs. The dual row bearing utilized in the Classic Dual Row and Single Row Pro retrofit kits have a dynamic load rating of 3300-4000 lbs. Ball bearings can carry 50% of their total load in thrust.

Installation is carried out with our newly developed, patent pending method, allowing for positive retention of the new bearing with an internal wire-lock. The installation of a dual row bearing in the place of a single row would not be possible without the specialized tooling and processes invented by Jake Raby and Charles Navarro. The Faultless IMS Tool is required for installation of the Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit and can also be used to install all existing IMS Retrofit and Solution bearings, as well as for extraction of the original bearing.
